We hurry up to slow down…
As we look to enter the final weeks of the pregnancy we find ourselves trying to slow down, recover, and get ready for what is ahead of us. Over the past three weeks thanks to our friends, family members, and co-workers we were very fortunate to attend numerous baby showers which blessed us with some truly wonderful and useful gifts. This was comforting to see so many people help support us as we venture down the unforeseen path of becoming parents very shortly.
There are so many things going on in both our professional lives that we have been kept very busy and this has taken some of the anxiety away. I guess at this point we have read what we can, talked to who we need to, and have done all that we can to get the baby room ready. Now we get to sit back and enjoy the time we have together before we welcome the newest member of our family into this world.
There are some many things that one could attempt to prepare, but in the end it all comes down to, “what’s best for the baby” and “what does the baby want/need.” We may think we know, but truly none of us have any idea. But that’s the best part about life. The unique, individuality, personality, and character of who we are. So as we wait to find out what is next to come we marvel and the thought that our child will be it’s own person. We will do our best to make sure we instill proper reasoning and decision making, and a good set of manners, but ultimately they are who they are. This is what excites me most. Knowing that I will have the special opportunity to help this new person in the world seek out the development they need, and be a guide as they walk down the path of life. Searching for answers to the very questions that we as adults often still struggle with “who are we?” and “what is my purpose?”
Now as we sit here and revel at the building anticipation we do what have to do and hurry up and wait for the arrival of baby Suwalski.
A mind of his/her own….
Last week at my check-up the midwife said the baby’s head was up toward my ribs. The portable ultrasound machine confirmed and she said that I had a week to turn the baby. She gave some exercises that had my hips elevated 12†that encouraged the baby to turn. If that wasn’t going to help, she would send me to a Dr./Acupuncturist that would prescribe moxibustin stick burning as a treatment. Turns out that if you burn this incense type treatment next to your little toe, your baby has a 70% chance of turning…guess it is a heat/pressure point. I thought it sounded a bit nuts, but after doing some reading, it seems more common than I thought.
However, today at my appointment the baby turning exercises must have worked because they confirmed that the baby is back from its vacation and back to having his/her head back down where it belongs. No moxibustin sticks for me.
We have had three wonderful baby showers and a fourth this weekend. We are very taken back and appreciative of our family & friends’ generosity. Thank you! In a matter of weeks, we will have most of the items that we could predict needing and a baby not far behind. We have assembled the crib and are waiting for our changing table/dresser to arrive to store our clothes & other items.
Tomorrow we finish our baby class and then have 5 weeks to wait for our little one to arrive. We toured the hospital & rooms last week – they are beautiful. The rooms are nice and large and have attached bathrooms with whirlpool tubs and large showers. They also have DVD players in the room and encourage us to bring music to play during the labor, as it might be relaxing. We are very comfortable with the midwives and the hospital and know that visitors will enjoy the family lounge (complete with computer & internet). Overall, we are getting ready for the next big adventure.
Ah Newborn Basics…
We have started our parenting classes this week with Newborn Basics and Breastfeeding Basics. Next week we start the three-week Labor, Birth & Beyond Class. Who knew that a breastfeeding class could be so informative and yet entertaining? Back in college I used to write quotes from lectures that made me giggle. Matt & I found ourselves doing that tonight at class. Some of our favorites were:
“Baby is the best milk-getter-outer there isâ€
“They know how & they’ll go to townâ€
“If you don’t leak, it just means you have a strong nipple ringâ€
“The baby probably wants pizza & beer, but you don’t have that right nowâ€
“The breast is not a strawâ€
“Bring the baby to the restaurant†(mother is the restaurant)
“Years ago women who breast fed survived because breast feeding made the uterus contract so she didn’t bleed to death – isn’t that cool?â€
Overall, we learned a lot….all that will be tested when our little one joins us in 8 weeks.
I had my 32-week check-up yesterday and all is well. The baby’s heartbeat is strong, my levels are all good and there aren’t any concerns with the pregnancy.
Other than that we spent some time updating our registry at Babies’r’Us and Target. We are convinced that there are a lot of gimmicks out there that aren’t necessary…so we tried to look into the crystal ball to determine what our potential needs are going to be.
Matt’s Favorite Tips from the Breastfeeding 101 pamphlet:
“7. Breastfeeding is associated with higher IQâ€
“47. Breastmilk is freeâ€
“63. Cow’s milk is designed for baby cowsâ€
“64. Human milk is designed for baby humansâ€
“69. Breastmilk means more sleep for dadâ€
“72. Breastmilk has never been recalledâ€
“74. With breastmilk there’s no need to know worry about what brand is betterâ€
“100. Breastfeed babies smell fantasticâ€

It’s All About Angles…
It’s all about angles…
For those who do not get to see Sara on a regular basis I wanted to share the current changes. She continues to grow and has been in good spirits, and does experience some of the discomforts of pregnancy. She has been known to fool a few people at times, with some of the clothes she wears you might not even believe she was expecting.

Sara had her latest appointment which confirmed that we now have less than 10 weeks left to full-term. All the tests came back great and the baby and mommy are doing very well. During the holiday season we visited both our families and traveled over 800 miles in a week and half. It was great to see everyone and spend time with our families.
All along in the back of our minds is always the thought that next year and from now on our travels will be completely different with the new addition to our family.
We would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a great New Year!

2007 will be an exciting one.

Special guest appearances by Dakota and Taylor!
Time Keeps Ticking…
As one sits and thinks about it they can’t help but begin to let their mind wander about the possibilities that lay ahead. I find myself stealing a few moments each day now thinking about what our lives will be like after we are blessed with our new addition. Sometimes things seem to be clear and other times I can’t begin fathom the opportunities or challenges that await us.
The one things that seems to bring this reality closer and closer is the changes now that seem to be happening almost daily to Sara as she continues along in her pregnancy. What tasks before that could be easily done, now take a few extra moments. When getting out of bed in the morning was simple task, one finds that it’s more of a 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 process (tuck and roll). Although this may inhibit her cat like reflexes it does not keep her spirits down. She continues to have a great attitude about the whole experience.
Over the Thanksgiving holidays were took a small vacation to visit with the Grant Family out in Vermont. The trip was a welcomed relief and probably the last big adventure before “we†become “threeâ€. Kari, Martin and Aidan were wonderful hosts, and we had a great time exploring the small town and campus (especially the Dirt Cowboy). We were also able to sneak in a trip to a Dartmouth Men’s Hockey game against Princeton, and as tradition goes after the first Dartmouth goal the crowd tossed tennis balls on the ice. Other than relaxing at home and having wonderful food and conversations we were still able to get out and see the town and visit the Hood Art Center on campus. After the 5 day stay we got up on Monday morning around 2:00 am CST and headed to the Manchester Airport to fly home.
Now we look forward to the remaining 12 weeks of pregnancy before the official due date of little Suwalski and only hope it goes as smooth as the first 28. Sara will begin visiting the Midwives more frequently and will finish up with her tests.
Here are some pictures from the visit:

Week: 25
It was another productive weekend in preparing for our little one on the way. We took a trip to Madison (and met up with my brother Kevin) to look at the wood finish for the one piece of furniture we have been wanting since we found out that we would be parents. While there, we confirmed that the combo dresser & changing table would be in “oak on pine†finish.
Today Matt spent the afternoon painting the baby’s room. At first glance the colors are VERY bright, but we think they will be just fine for the room…especially after we get furniture & other decorations in the room.
